Happy Friday everyone! I am especially excited about this week's picture book.
Title: Hurray for Hat!
Written and illustrated by: Brian Won
Suitable for ages: 0-8
Opening: When Elephant woke up, he was very grumpy. The doorbell rang. elephant stomped down the stairs. "Go away! I'm grumpy!" There was a present at the doorstep1 Elephant unwrapped the box.
Brief Summuary: Elephant is grumpy, but a mysterious, wonderful hat shows up on his doorstop and he spreads the joy of the hat with all his animal friends who are also grumpy.
Why I love this book: I love the message behind this book. It's amazing what a simple gift can do to cheer someone up. An act of kindness is all it takes to turn a frown into a smile. Also my 3 year old son LOVED this book! After reading it 3 times in one sitting he insisted that we act the book out.
Make your own fabulous hat! The crazier the better.
What you'll need
A hat (obviously)
construction paper
scissors
markers
any odds and ends around the house you think might make marvelous hat decorations!
Just let your imaginations run wild. My son wanted to follow the book's hat as closely as possible so we made a little crown and feather, but the hat is yours so you can make it any way you want!

ReplyDeleteThanks Sue! We had a blast.
DeleteWhat a cute story. I love the hat your son made. Great photos. This would pair nicely with "A Happy Hat," by Cecil Kim (about all the owners of a hat).
ReplyDeleteI'll have to read that one! Thanks for the recommendation. I love all things involving hats.
DeleteLove this book - graphically beautiful, but I like to get excited over simple things in life (and I have a hat collection!).
ReplyDeleteIt's a fantastic book. Haha! I'm sure you have a marvelous hat collection.
DeleteLove the hat - it's inspired! Great book choice and review.
ReplyDeleteThank you Cathy!
DeleteI love the sequential sharing in this book. Putting together and taking apart. With the cold weather, my head has permanent "hat hair."
ReplyDeleteI hear ya! It's positively freezing out here in Illinois.
DeleteBeautiful fun book. Love the message of sharing and that a small gift can make the world of difference. :) Nice choice.
ReplyDeleteThank you! It's so true. The smallest things can make the biggest difference.

ReplyDeleteGreat review, Heather...and wonderful photos. ;) and I agree about a small gift or token being able to lift someones spirits and change their outlook...it's so important to pass along positivity...even just a smile can do the trick. :) :) ;)
Thank you Vivian! I agree with you 100% Positivity and kindness can do a whole world of good.
DeleteI love the message, but I also love the honesty of the first few lines. We are a bit grumpy some mornings at our house until something sparks a change. Looking forward to reading this one. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteIt's so true! That very first page put a smile on my face because I related to it so well.
DeleteThat looks fun!
ReplyDeleteThanks Cathy!
DeleteSquee! I just got some of Brian's work for my wall. Have you been to his new venture, Live In A Story?
